This book provided the evolving framework for MANY. The projects it features elevate designers who work with community groups or on projects with complex social aspects. William Drenttel wrote the foreword, and Ellen Lupton contributed 10 illustrations, one for each strategy. The book has been reviewed by Fast Company, Core77, Communication Arts, Design Observer, HOW Magazine, and Polis, amongst other media outlets. www.designingforsocialchange.com
The book includes 20 case studies from graphic designers around the country and various entry points for readers to learn about aspects of each project. Ten strategies focus on helping designers navigate the process of working on often-complex community-based projects. It also includes a chapter about funding social impact projects.
"Made in Midtown" case study about designing tools and experiences that increased awareness about the effects of rezoning in mid-town Manhattan, NYC.
"No Hooks before Books" case study about designing tools to support an after-school boxing center in Baltimore, MD.
Some of the many insights we learned from case study contributors.
The final chapter focuses on strategies to fund projects that are often under-resourced.
We designed the book cover to reflect the most important details about working on community-based design projects: the strategies.
